Many people find it difficult to decide as to where they would like to be located. Many people face the dilemma of deciding whether they would like to live in an urban or suburban area, near the mountains or the forest or the ocean, near the family or away from the family, stay in an independent house, gated community or an apartment complex. There are many factors, which help you to decide where you would like to live after you retire.

First the physical structure or the layout of the place needs to be examined where aspects like the presence of a staircase will have to be taken into account. The actual area of the living space and its view and ventilation will also have to be taken into consideration apart from its location which could be either in the city, in the suburbs or in the countryside and how easily transport will be accessible from the location. The cost of all extra charges like electricity, water, heating and maintenance will also have to be taken into account. You will also have to find out how close or far away your friends and relatives would be from the house which are you thinking about and how much distance you will have to commute in order to reach the nearest hospital or medical center.

After all the available factors have been listed out, you need to decide exactly what degree of importance has to be given to each aspect. The total cost of all the facilities needs to be calculated to see whether it fits into your budget. Apart from deciding what it is that you really want at your new place you should also decide what are the factors, which should not be present at all costs. Some people do not want a house with a yard because they do not want to take the effort of shoveling the snow in the winter. Some people do not like to have other people staying in the floor above them or anywhere close by.

Try and see whether any groups which match any of your hobbies and interests like hiking, reading, movies etc are present anywhere close by. The local newspapers will have all the information about all the local activities, which take place in the area. Interaction with the neighbors and other people living in the area will increase your social network and you will get to know about things which you need to be cautious about like petty thieves, salesmen, street dogs etc. Join the local book clubs, religious groups, attend prayer meetings and also participate in any of the voluntary activities. You can also join the local fitness center, which is located close to the new place where you are staying.

There are many retired people who keep enumerating the benefits of the place where they stay after retirement. They keep themselves occupied with many different kinds of activities and also engage in hobbies, which they have neglected during their working life.
